How to get your website recommended by ChatGPT and other AI assistants
People now ask ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews what to buy. Getting mentioned isn't a trick. It's making your site easy for a machine to understand and quote. This is the checklist we ran on autosolo.io.
What is AEO (answer engine optimization)?
AEO means shaping your site so AI assistants can understand it and quote it in their answers. It overlaps with SEO, plus a focus on plain answers, structured data and consistent facts.
You may also see it called GEO (generative engine optimization). Same idea.
How do AI assistants decide what to recommend?
They draw on pages they can crawl or search, and favour ones that answer the question directly, state facts clearly and agree with other sources.
No one outside these companies knows the exact weighting, and anyone promising guaranteed AI citations is guessing. What reliably helps: being crawlable, being clear, and having a page that answers the exact question.
What should be on my home page?
In plain text near the top: what you sell, who it's for, and the price or how to start. Not only in images or a clever tagline.
An assistant that can't tell what you do from the first screen won't recommend you for it. "Ready-made Claude agents for freelancers. Three are free." beats "Your first AI employee." on its own.
Which structured data matters most?
Organization on the home page, Product or Service with an Offer on product pages, FAQPage where questions are visible, and BreadcrumbList on nested pages.
Only mark up what's true and visible. No invented reviews or ratings. Validate that every JSON-LD block parses.
What is llms.txt and do I need one?
llms.txt is a plain-text file at /llms.txt that summarises your site and links its key pages for AI tools. It's cheap to add and removes guesswork.
Include a two-sentence summary, your key pages with one line each, and prices. Ours is at /llms.txt.
Should I let AI crawlers access my site?
If you want to be recommended, yes. Check robots.txt isn't blocking GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot or Google-Extended by accident.
Blocking them is a valid choice if you'd rather not be used for training. Just make it a deliberate one.
How do I find out where my site stands?
Audit it: crawlability, titles, schema, answer readiness and speed, then the customer questions you have no page for.
Our SEO/AEO Auditor does this in Claude and hands back a scorecard and fixes with paste-ready code. On our own site it found a duplicate www host, descriptions too long to show in full, and three buying questions with no page. This guide exists because of that audit.
Quick answers
Can I pay to be recommended by ChatGPT?
No. There's no paid placement in ChatGPT's normal answers. You improve the odds by making your site clear, crawlable and useful for the question.
Is AEO different from SEO?
It builds on SEO. The extra focus is direct answers, structured data, llms.txt and consistent facts across your site.
How long does AEO take to work?
Assistants that search the web can pick up changes as soon as pages are recrawled; others update when their models are retrained. Expect weeks to months.
