How to install a Claude skill (in about 3 minutes)
A Claude skill is a folder of instructions that teaches Claude one job. Installing one takes about three minutes and no code. Here is the exact process we use for every agent on this site.
What is a Claude skill?
A Claude skill is a folder with a SKILL.md file (instructions plus a short description of when to use it) and, optionally, reference files and examples. Claude reads the description, and when your request matches, it loads the full instructions and follows them.
Think of it as a job description Claude keeps on file. It doesn't run on a server and doesn't need an API key. It runs inside your own Claude account, so your data stays there.
What do I need before I start?
A paid Claude plan (Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise) with Skills turned on, and the skill as a .zip file.
- In Claude, open Settings → Capabilities and switch on Skills.
- If Claude asks, switch on Code execution too. Some skills need it to read files.
- Don't unzip the download. The Claude app expects the .zip.
How do I install a skill in the Claude app?
Open Settings → Capabilities → Skills, click Upload skill, choose the .zip, and make sure the new skill is switched on.
- Open Settings → Capabilities → Skills in claude.ai or the desktop app.
- Click Upload skill and pick the .zip file.
- Check that the skill appears in the list and its toggle is on.
- Start a new chat. Skills load per chat, so an old chat won't see it.
How do I install a skill in Claude Code?
Unzip it and move the skill's folder into ~/.claude/skills (for every project) or .claude/skills inside one project.
From the folder where you unzipped it, run mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && mv skill-name ~/.claude/skills/, replacing skill-name with the folder name. Restart Claude Code or start a new session, and the skill is available.
How do I know the skill works?
Say its trigger phrase in a new chat, or paste the test prompt that came with it, and compare the answer to the example output.
Every autosolo agent ships with examples/test.md: a test prompt and the output from a real run. Your answer won't match word for word, but the structure should be the same. If Claude answers like a normal chat and ignores the skill, the skill is probably switched off or you're in an old chat.
Is it safe to install a skill?
Only install skills from sources you trust, and read the SKILL.md first. It's plain text, so you can see exactly what it tells Claude to do.
Look for skills that say what they will never do (for example, never send an email without asking) and that treat content from emails and web pages as data, not instructions. Every agent we sell has a "Rules" section at the bottom of its SKILL.md for this reason.

Do Claude skills work on the free plan?
No. Skills need a paid Claude plan: Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise.
Do I need to unzip a Claude skill before uploading it?
Not for the Claude app: upload the .zip as it is. For Claude Code, unzip it and move the folder into your skills folder.
Why doesn't Claude use my skill?
Check that the skill is switched on in Settings → Capabilities → Skills, start a new chat, and use words that match the skill's purpose, like its trigger phrase.
Can I edit a skill after installing it?
Yes. It's a text file. Edit SKILL.md, zip the folder again and re-upload it, or edit it in place in Claude Code.
